Schools chancellor defends DOE layoffs

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott is standing behind the city's decision to lay off hundreds of workers last week.

Nearly 700 school employees were handed pink slips on Friday in the largest round of layoffs in any single city agency since Mayor Michael Bloomberg took office.

Walcott said, "Unfortunately we have a very difficult budget reality and it's only projected to get harder."

Schools throughout The Bronx lost aides, parent coordinators and other staffers. Teachers were not included, but some say the losses will be a big burden on them too.
