Census: Bronx leading NYC in poverty levels
More people live below the poverty line in The Bronx than in any other borough, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau numbers.
The poverty rate citywide jumped last year to 20.1 percent, while in The Bronx, about 30 percent of residents are living in poverty, which is the highest rate in more than a decade.
Workers at local food pantries say they aren't surprised by the statistics, and have seen a spike in families who are struggling with hunger and are in need of a hot meal.
The group Alliance for a Greater New York says the poverty numbers show that New York City is still in the middle of a jobs crisis, which is particularly troubling considering the city's high cost of living.
