Dozens protest DOE layoffsPosted: Updated:
Dozens of parents, school aides and other community members took to the streets today to protest the Department of Education's (DOE) decision to cut around 800 jobs.
Leaders of the Local 372 and DC 37 unions organized the rally outside of P.S. 66. They say that Mayor Michael Bloomberg and School Chancellor Dennis Walcott's decision to lay off school aides, parent coordinators, and health and family workers in the city's schools is heartless.
City administrators say budget cuts are forcing the reductions, while protesters argue that the cuts will put student health, safety and education at risk.
Organizers say they have several more rallies planned throughout the city before pink slips are officially handed out on Oct. 7.
