Tenants struggle with deplorable apartments in West Farms

Posted: Updated:

Tenants in a West Farms apartment building say they've been forced to endure deplorable living conditions for years and that it only got worse this week.

According to residents, a water leak that began last Friday caused the ceiling to collapse on top of a pregnant woman at 1558 Bryant Ave. yesterday. They say the fire department was forced to turn off the water, leaving other tenants without running water for days.

The complex, along with the two buildings across the street, have consistently been named the city's worst buildings for tenants. Residents complain that the management company is slow to respond to emergencies, including the most recent water leak.

Exact Capital recently took over all three troubled buildings and plans to demolish two of them. Tenants say they hope they can manage until renovations are complete.
