Kelly reminds officers of NYPD's drug arrest policyPosted: Updated:
New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has recently reiterated and reminded officers, and residents, about the NYPD's drug arrest policy.
According to Kelly, if officers find a small amount of marijuana on a person, but it is not in public display, they should be given a summons and released. In the past, Kelly says some people possessing the drug had been arrested.
Critics of the NYPD say thousands are wrongly arrested each year due to stop and frisk techniques. They hope Kelly's order, issued Sept. 19, will help stop those arrests for misdemeanor drug charges.
According to officials, orders similar to this are common in the police department.
