Residents still without gas more than week after main break

Some Mount Hope residents still have no gas or hot water nearly two weeks after a massive water main break caused the area to flood.

Residents on Townsend Avenue had their gas shut off after the water main break on July 27 on nearby Jerome Avenue. However, Con Edison says some buildings have a pre-existing issue with piping that makes it dangerous to turn the gas back on.

Con Edison says the buildings have to fix the issue and provide proof of the repair before they can turn on the gas. Residents say they need the issue resolved as quickly as possible.

The building management company, Mount Hope Housing, says it is working with tenants to possibly issue rebates and hope to have gas service restored as soon as possible.
