NY/NJ Port Authority board raises tolls, fares

(AP) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey board approved toll and fare hikes on its bridges, tunnels and trains.

Nine of the 12 commissioners were present for the agency's boardmeeting at its Manhattan headquarters. They voted unanimously forthe increases.

Drivers will pay $1.50 more to enter New York from New Jerseystarting next month. Smaller increases will continue yearly until2015. Drivers without EZ-Pass would have to pay $2 extra.

The $1.75 fare to ride the PATH train will increase 25 cents ayear for four years.

The Port Authority originally proposed much higher increases,angering commuters.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christiereleased a plan late Thursday for more modest increases thanoriginally proposed by the Port Authority.
