Special bike tour launched for Bronx teens

Bronx high school students now have the chance to get active and learn about their borough while riding a bike.

The group VeloCity has launched a seven-week program called Bikesplorations in an effort to introduce kids from underserved neighborhoods to urban planning and community involvement.

All of the bikes used in the program were donated by the Bronx River Alliance. At the end of the seven weeks, participants will receive a stipend for organizing their own tour and presentation.

"We hope that they walk away knowing a little more about their city, and also having a love of biking," says VeloCity co-founder Naomi Doerner.

This is the first time the program is being held in The Bronx. This session is focused on Soundview, but organizers hope to expand to another Bronx neighborhood next year.
