BX braces for Hurricane Irene

On the heels of an earthquake that rattled the East Coast today, a powerful storm is set to sweep up from the tropics this week, and many Bronx residents are bracing for the worst.

Hurricane Irene struck Puerto Rico yesterday morning, leaving a trail of destruction. A state of emergency has been declared and officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) say aid will be provided to the island's residents.

The storm also blew through the Dominican Republic with 100-mph winds, scattering debris and flooding roadways.

Here in The Bronx, boat owners are tying down their vessels securely, or pulling them out of the water.

Some models indicate that the storm may stay off the coast without making a landfall, while others predict Irene could arrive in New York on Saturday or Sunday.Track Hurricane Irene
