Strong winds leave downed powerlines, trees

Hurricane Irene's destruction can be seen all across the borough tonight, with downed powerlines and trees on almost every block.

In Riverdale, tree branches are scattered everywhere and century old trees lie flat on the ground.

On West 231st and Independence Avenue, a powerline was snapped in half as a result of Hurricane Irene's powerful winds. Con Ed officials rushed to the scene and warned residents to stay away from the dangerous electrical wires.

While many Bronx residents are relieved that no serious injuries or fatalities occurred as a result of Hurricane Irene, they will never underestimate the power and destruction that mother nature can cause.
