MTA: Subway service back after Irene leaves

The MTA has resumed subway service as of 6 a.m. after Tropical Storm Irene forced an unprecedented system shutdown.

The agency says commuters should expect delays and fewer trains will run than in a normal morning rush.

Officials say the city escaped much of a punishing blow from the storm. There were minimal signs of damage to the overall system and most subway tunnels did not flood.
