Tree removal along Sedwig Ave. draws mixed opinionsPosted: Updated:
A plan to remove trees near Jerome Park Reservoir is drawing mixed reaction from residents.
The Department of Environmental Protection says an expert recommended dozens of trees be removed along Sedgwick Avenue near Fort Independence Park in order to comply with state safety regulations. The DEP maintains the trees undermine the stability of the embankment, which protects the area from flooding.
Residents are split on how they feel about the plan. One resident said she could see cutting the trees down if they were damaged or dying, but didn't feel it was right to cut down healthy trees. However, another resident says the trees need to go because they are hanging over and you can't see what's in front of you.
DEP officials say some of the trees are in bad shape. So far, there is no date set as to when the trees will come down.
