Business trying to forge ahead with cleanup after water main break

Businesses on Jerome Avenue and East 177th Street are trying to clean up the mess after a water main broke this morning, leaving their stores flooded and merchandise destroyed.

Some owners report that water was 14 inches high in their stores and their basements are completely flooded.

Elhad Diallo, who owns African Grocery Store, says he'll have to throw out thousands of dollars in merchandise which was just imported from Africa.

Many store owners say they are worried that the water may structurally damage their buildings and hope that the city and their insurance companies can help them get back on their feet.
