BX soccer teams cry foul over limited space
Every weekend, the newly renovated fields at Van Cortlandt Park are filled with soccer players, but since the Parks Department renovated the Parade Grounds, soccer players have lost two of their eight fields. The Parade Grounds serve children and adults alike. The Riverdale Soccer Club alone has more than 700 players and has seen continued growth over the past few years. Despite soccer's popularity in The Bronx, the Parks Department has designated a large portion of the new fields for cricket. Soccer enthusiasts say they have no problem with a few cricket fields, but the amount of space designated for the sport far outweighs the demand.A spokesperson for the Parks Department says in order to meet safety standards and make improvements, the number of fields for each sport had to be reduced. However, soccer leagues say losing 25 percent of their fields was excessive.
