Muller Army site future up for debate

Bronx residents will be able to give their input on plans for the Muller Army site at a public hearing tonight in Wakefield.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed putting a homeless shelter at the site due to a city-wide shortage of beds for the needy. Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. has twice boycotted a vote on the measure, arguing that the area already has its fair share of shelters.

The city has also proposed three other homeless shelters within walking distance of the Muller site.

Diaz says he'd like to transfer National Guard units from the Kingsbridge armory to the Muller center and turn the armory into a school.

The public hearing is set for 6 p.m. at P.S. 21 at 715 East 225th Street.Muller Army Reserve Center
