No charges against cop in fatal BX shooting

(AP) - Prosecutors will not file criminal charges inthe shooting death of a 43-year-old man by a Pelham Manor policeofficer after a high-speed chase from Westchester into TheBronx. Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said Monday a six-monthinvestigation into the incident found no evidence that would leadto charges against the officer involved, Kenneth Stretz. The shooting was touched off by a call about an illegaloperation of an all-terrain vehicle. Stretz tried to pull over theman on the ATV. The man, Wardell Johnson, failed to comply, drove into TheBronx, crashed his vehicle and ran off. Pelham Manor police saidStretz pursued Johnson into a backyard and got into a violentstruggle. He says Stretz fired his gun twice, hitting Johnson onceand killing him.
