Community remembers mother and daughter killed in Morris Ave. fire

A makeshift memorial has been growing outside of the apartment building where Kety Sanchez, 30, and her 1-year-old daughter, Keiry, died yesterday morning.

Police believe Sanchez was stabbed to death by Vincente Cordero, the baby's father, who then set the apartment on fire. Cordero died later in the day at St. Barnabas Hospital from severe burns he suffered.

Friends and neighbors say the family was "good people," and never saw anything amiss. Cordero's barber added that "He loved his kids like crazy."

The downstairs neighbor, however, claims to have heard a woman screaming in the apartment yesterday.

According to police, Cordero had no record of domestic incidents, though they believe it was a dispute that set everything off. Surviving members of the family, including a grandmother and two older children who were in school at the time, are temporarily staying with other family members.
