Ex-state Sen. Espada, son appear in court

Former state Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr. and his son, Pedro G. Espada, were back in court earlier this afternoon as lawyers attempted to confirm a trial date.

Both Espada and his son are accused of embezzling more than $500,000 from their Soundview Health Clinic.

It is the third time Espada and his son faced a federal judge since December, when they were indicted on embezzlement charges. Officials say the used the money stolen to support a lavish lifestyle that included expensive meals, Broadway show tickets, sporting events, luxury cars and a homemade petting zoo.

They have both pleaded not guilty.
