BX accident survivor thanks blood donors at 'Best in Blood' event

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. hosted an event today to honor organizations that sponsor blood drives, and as a testament to their important work, a young woman whose life was saved by blood donors was on hand.

Emily Sexton was a senior at Preston High School when she was struck by an alleged drunken driver in November. She was treated at Jacobi Medical Center and family members say she received 20 units of blood during several surgeries at Jacobi Medical Center.

At today's event, Sexton said she has never given blood herself, but she now plans to.

In 2010, approximately 16,446 blood donations were made within The Bronx, a 2-percent increase in donations from 2009.
