Police: Sex offender working as sales rep attacks teen

Police say a convicted sex offender who worked as an energy company representative sexually assaulted a Bronx teen while making a house call Tuesday.

Police say Jimmy Avila was arrested and charged with raping a 19-year-old at her home in the Grand Concourse area.

Investigators say Avila was making door-to-door sales calls for Citizens Choice Energy. Avila allegedly forced his way into the home and attacked the girl.

Police say the victim's father came home during the attack. Avila allegedly beat him until he was unconscious and fled, but he left behind a work notebook that helped detectives track him down.

Officials say Avila was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl at knifepoint in 2004. He spent seven years in prison until he was freed last year, and is still on probation for the crime, according to authorities.

Investigators say Avila was hired as a marketing representative last month. Level 3 sex offenders are required to report employer information to the State Division of Justice Services. Failure to report is a felony violation.
