Bronx teens get hands-on experience in cosmetology

A group of Bronx high school students is learning what it takes to make it in the field of cosmetology thanks to a new hands-on program. Students in the specialized four-year program at Grace Dodge Career and Technical High School have to complete 1,000 hours of training before they are able to take their state exam to become certified cosmetologists. Every Thursday, the New Image Beauty Salon run by the students is open to the public. Senior Denise Tapia has been in the program since she was a freshman. She says it gives her real-life experience working with customers and running a business. The director of the program says a number of graduates are now working in high-end salons around the city.
