2 Haitian children recover after heart surgery in BXPosted: Updated:
Two children from Haiti are recovering after successful open-heart surgery procedures were performed on them last week at a Bronx hospital.
Not long after the earthquake in Haiti last year, Dorisca Robens, 12, and Kensley Gerome, 4, were diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Doctors told the boys? mothers that left untreated, the two would live only to the age of 15.
Dorisca and Kensley were flown to New York, where they both underwent surgery last week at the Children?s Hospital at Montefiore. Doctors say the boys are recovering nicely, and both were released from the hospital this afternoon.
Experts say the heart defect that?s rare in children elsewhere is common in Haiti, and estimate that some 1,000 children in the Caribbean nation are awaiting surgery.
