Convoy of cars makes way through BX to protest teacher layoffs

A long convoy of honking cars snaked throughout the borough today, calling attention to proposed education budget cuts that could translate to massive teacher layoffs at Bronx schools.

Hundreds of parents and teachers taped signs to their cars and laid on their horns as they crawled along Southern Boulevard. The noisy convoy came to a stop at the office of the United Federation of Teachers.

Until state and city budgets are finalized, it?s difficult to predict how severely city schools will be affected. Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s budget includes millions of dollars in cuts to education. The New York State budget restores some money to city schools, but Bloomberg said today that it won?t be nearly enough.
