Top athletic school to close due to poor academics
Parents and students are upset that a top-performing athletic school in the Bronx is being cut due to its failing academic program.
John F. Kennedy High School is one of many in the Bronx that is being closed by the Department of Education due to ailing grades and low graduation rates. However, the school has a stellar football and basketball program that parents say their children need.
Education officials say if their plan goes through, the school will be converted into two charter schools by 2014. Students currently enrolled would still be able to graduate on schedule.
The DOE plans to vote on the future of JFK High School tonight.
