3 children, 4 firefighters injured in East 228th Street fire

Fire officials say three children were seriously hurt in a building fire this afternoon.

Officials say the children, ages 5, 6 and the third unknown, were transported to Jacobi Medical Center in serious to critical condition. The father was sent to the same hospital with minor injuries.

The fire broke out on East 228th Street, and required the efforts of 60 firefighters. They were able to control the flames shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Witnesses say people were seen scrambling out of the building by means of the fire escape.

Officials say four firefighters were also transported to the Cornell Burn Unit in Manhattan with severe burn injuries.
