FDNY urges residents to take fire prevention steps

The FDNY is urging Bronx residents to take safety precautions to help prevent fires this winter.

More than a third of home fires occur during December, January, and February, according to the FDNY.

A cigarette and a candle are being blamed for two deadly fires in The Bronx this week alone. FDNY officials say those are some of the most common fire starters, yet the easiest to prevent.

Fire officials say residents should turn space heaters off before going to bed, use battery-operated flameless candles and never use a stove to heat a home because of dangerous carbon monoxide gases.
