Woman indicted in baby-snatch case

(AP) - A woman accused of snatching anewborn from a New York hospital more than two decades ago has beenindicted on a kidnapping charge.

The indictment against Ann Pettway was returned by a federalgrand jury in Manhattan yesterday. She's been held without bailafter her January arrest on charges that she kidnapped CarlinaWhite from Harlem Hospital in August 1987. White is now 23 yearsold.

Pettway will enter a plea to the indictment at a hearing onFebruary 24. Her lawyer did not immediately respond to a messageseeking comment. Carlina White's mother, Joy White, also did notimmediately respond.

The FBI has said in court papers that the Raleigh, N.C., womantook the baby after her own efforts at childbearing failed.
