Residents demand safer streets following Grand Concourse accident

A Bronx neighborhood is calling for safer streets as they say goodbye to an 11-year-old boy killed while crossing Grand Concourse last Wednesday.

Family and friends gathered at Ortiz Funeral Home today for Russell Smith, who was struck by an SUV near 183rd Street. Residents say he isn't the first person to lose their life at the dangerous intersection.

According to transportation records, there have been 71 pedestrian-related incidents between 1995 - 2005 at that location. Pedestrians complain they only have 40 seconds to cross eight lanes of traffic and that drivers don't abide by the 30 mph speed limit.
