Woman accused of kidnapping baby pleads not guilty

(AP) - A North Carolina woman indicted on a charge that she kidnapped a newborn from a Harlem hospital more than twodecades ago has pleaded not guilty in New York.

Ann Pettway was asked by a federal judge in Manhattan if she waspleading not guilty to a kidnapping charge during an arraignmentThursday afternoon. She firmly responded "yes sir." Her lawyersaid outside court they are searching for evidence that somebodyelse snatched the infant.

Pettway has been held without bail since she was arrested lastmonth. She was charged with kidnapping Carlina White from HarlemHospital in August 1987. White is now 23 years old.

The FBI has said in court papers that the Raleigh, N.C., womantook the baby after her own efforts at childbearing failed.
