1,400 Bronx teachers at risk of losing jobsPosted: Updated:
More than 1,400 Bronx teachers have learned that their jobs could be on the chopping block due to massive budget cuts proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Under the plan, 6 percent of teaching jobs would be eliminated across the city unless the state allocates more money for schools in its budget. Bloomberg defended the plan, saying that layoffs are necessary to close the deficit without additional funding.
Both the teacher and principal unions say they plan on fighting back against cuts. Teachers' Union President Michael Mulgrew argues layoffs would create skyrocketing class sizes.
The Department of Education released the layoff list yesterday, following news that the state Senate plans to vote on a bill allowing teacher cuts to be based on performance, rather than seniority.
