Public schools in BX, rest of city remain open
Public schools remained open today in The Bronx despite a weather emergency being called by the city as nearly a foot of snow was dumped on the borough.
Throughout the city, schools reported low attendance. At Lehman High School in the Bronx, officials said there wasn't enough students to hold regular classes and many spent the day in study halls, the gym or the auditorium.
Many parents criticized School Chancellor Cathie Black for not calling a snow day, but she and Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the decision. They praised students, teachers and school workers who made it in despite the storm.
