NYPD: Officer fatal shootings at record lowPosted: Updated:
Police officer fatal shootings are down across the city, according to data compiled by the New York City Police Department.
When the NYPD first began keeping statistics in 1971, officers shot and killed 93 people. Last year that number fell to just eight.
Additionally, 221 people were injured by police gunfire in 1971, compared to 16 in 2010.
Officers say a decrease in crime and better training led to the improvements.
