Underground fire knocks out power for Riverdale tenants

Two Riverdale apartment buildings are without power tonight after an underground transformer fire.

Tenants in the buildings on Knolls Crescent endured hours of no heat.

Con Edison tells News 12 The Bronx that the fire happened on the customers' secondary cable and gas main.

Fire officials say the fire could've been started when salt to prevent icy roads seeped down into the transformer and corroded the wires, causing a gigantic manhole fire.

The superintendent of 60 Knolls Crescent says he ordered two generators and hopes to have power back on as soon as possible.
