Haitian girl celebrates birthday after open heart surgery in BX

A homeless girl from Haiti celebrated her birthday today in the Bronx one week after undergoing extensive heart surgery.

Lovely Ajuste had successful open heart surgery last week at Montefiore Medical Center to correct a congenital heart problem. Today, she celebrated her 16th birthday. Supporters threw her a combined get-well and birthday party at the Ronald McDonald House where she and her mother are staying.

"I feel very good and I'm amazed," she said through a translator. "I didn't even think that besides the surgery they would celebrate my birthday. I am so grateful."
