Dual rallies held in BX on Roe vs. Wade anniversary
Abortion rights supporters and opponents staged dual rallies today in the Bronx to mark the 38th anniversary of the landmark Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court ruling that established a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy.
The protests were held in front of the Bronx Medical Pavilion on Southern Boulevard, where anti- and pro-abortion activists held up signs and handed out pamphlets.
"What we are here to do is to show there are alternatives," says Father Simeon Lewis, of St. Francis Church. "Our focus is on the child because the baby inside can't choose."
Supporters of the Roe vs. Wade ruling, however, disagree, saying a woman's decision to have an abortion is a personal choice and a constitutional right.
