Officer shoots suspect's elderly father in drug raid

Officials say a police officer accidentally shot a suspect's elderly father at his Soundview home Saturday, in a drug bust gone wrong.

Authorities say a swarm of police officers raided the apartment on Evergreen Avenue early Saturday morning, searching for suspect Alberto Colon, 41.

That's when Officer Andrew McCormack accidentally shot Colon's 76-year-old father in the stomach, investigators say.

The elderly man, who works as a cab driver, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he's listed in stable condition. Officials say Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited him there Saturday afternoon.

Alberto Colon was later arrested on narcotics charges after police recovered heroin from the apartment, officials say.

An investigation into the shooting is on-going.

In a statement, City Councilwoman Annabel Palma said the community should wait until a full investigation has been completed, and should not rush to judgment.
