Montefiore Medical Center is celebrating 100 years in the Bronx and how the institution became a staple of the borough.
Montefiore was founded in 1884 as a home to treat the chronically ill, but it eventually evolved into one of the most trusted and largest health care facilities in the country.
Dr. Steven Sayfer, president and CEO of Montefiore, says that there is no academic medical center that remains as committed to the community.
Over the years, the hospital has made headlines, most recently with the first-ever successful separation of twins joined at the head in 2004.
Sayfer also says that Montefiore was one of the first facilities to trade old filing systems for efficient electronic filing.
