If Mayor Bill de Blasio has his way, pay phones may become a thing of the past.
The city is looking into modifying pay phones into Internet hotspots. De Blasio has a plan to sell advertising to make them free to run, and says it will create new jobs to install and maintain the networks.
The city says it is accepting design proposals for how the new Internet phones would look and function. If it gets a proposal that works, the city could see the project launch in about five years.
