NYPD amps up security for New Year'sPosted: Updated:
The NYPD is ramping up security as New Yorkers get ready to celebrate the New Year.
More than 1 million people are expected to gather in Times Square alone, but the police department says it's ready. During a news briefing Tuesday, the NYPD said it'll be utilizing a network of surveillance cameras, along with about 1,000 uniformed and plain clothes officers.
Along with Times Square, other busy areas will be heavily patrolled, including Central Park, Prospect Park and Coney Island. Protests will be kept under control with cops teaming up in pairs, and revelers can expect security screenings near subways.
Police say they haven't received any terror threats, but will have bomb squads sweeping hotels, construction sites and parking lots.
Anyone planning to travel around the city is encouraged to take mass transit and leave large bags at home.
