Syracuse bracing for FCS rival Villanova

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - (AP) -- Syracuse opens the season Friday night at home against Villanova.

The Orange's Scott Shafer is about to experience again that anxiety over facing an opponent from college football's second tier. At least he's used to it.

In his four seasons before Shafer took over, Doug Marrone had to prepare the Orange twice for Maine, and once each for Colgate, Rhode Island and Stony Brook. Syracuse won all four games against those FCS teams, but all were tough encounters, and Shafer expects more of the same. Last year, Shafer's squad beat Wagner handily.

Starting his second year at Syracuse, Shafer knows who his quarterback is, and there is only one, redshirt junior Terrel Hunt. The coach hopes that makes a significant difference.
