A nonprofit environmental group raised awareness for climate change ahead of Earth Day at a Jones Beach event on Sunday.
The Long Island Sierra Club hosted a discussion at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center in Wantagh about solutions to rising temperatures.
The organization said 2023 was the hottest year on record.
Organizers said the quickest solutions to the climate crisis would come from policy changes at the federal and state level. They added, however, there are things that communities can do to help.
"We could use solar [power] on our homes, we could plug into community solar [power], so we're using that natural renewable resource instead of oil, instead of gas. So there are choices we can make to help with that process," said Melissa Parrott, deputy executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island.
